HISTORY
Nestled behind a discreet gate of one of Mexico City’s sought-out taquerias, lies Vecindad Múrales, a traditional early 20th-century vecindad in the Historical Center of Coyocán. The Hidden Gem of this land.
Vecindad is a type of housing arrangement that originated in Mexico in the early 20th century. It refers to a group of small homes or rooms of neighbours that are clustered around a central courtyard. Vecindades are often found in the historic center of Mexican cities, and are known for their vibrant, close-knit communities.
The central courtyard serves as a gathering place for residents, where they can socialize, play, and relax. Today, vecindades are a popular subject in Mexican literature and film, often portrayed as a symbol of traditional Mexican culture and community spirit.

Vecindad Múrales is a series of row homes where artists, actors, environmental activists, anthropologists, writers and our multiple animals live.
In 2020, during the heart of the pandemic, neighbors got together and started painting murals in the vecindad. Nowadays, there are seven 10-meter-high murals of muralists from Mexico and Latin America. One day Vecindad Múrales aims to become the Wynwood Walls of Mexico City.

Secondly, atmosphere inside of our vesindad is quite artistic itself. We love Art in so many languages, and always happy to exchange, inspiring each other. So we start to promote art and culture in Mexico City, gathering people together.
Vecindad Múrales offers rooms of our Artist Residence for different types of creators. Here you will find a private space to work and create, as well as a community of fellow artists to collaborate and connect with. It is a perfect opportunity for visual artists, dancers, writers, composers, and filmmakers to focus on their work in an environment that fosters creativity and community. Another way which we found to promote Local Art and collaborate with talented Artists who bring a special atmosphere to our place is creating the Museum of Murals in our common yard.
